HOW TO BURN CANDLES LIKE A PRO

Burning a candle can seem like an easy task, but did you know there are ways to burn them properly? Things like flaring, dripping, and smoking can be avoided when proper usage techniques are applied. Read on for all you need to know to burn like a pro and get the most out of your favorite candles!

  1. Time your first burn. The first burn is key in setting up your candle to live its fullest life. A rule of thumb is to burn for one hour per inch of candle diameter, or long enough to create liquified wax across the entire surface of the candle from edge to edge. This will prevent tunneling, or the hollowing of the center of the candle. This will also prevent “memory rings,” which would prevent the candle from burning to its full diameter. By burning a little longer the first time, you can enjoy consistent, even burning for the rest of the life of your candle.

  2. Trim the wick routinely. After placing your candle on a clean, flat surface to burn, trim the wick to ¼”. This is because wicks that are too long or crooked can cause uneven burning, flaring, dripping, and even extra soot. Trimming the wick in this way every few hours of burn time can help prolong the life of your candle.

  3. Consider double-wick candles. Not only do they burn brighter and throw fragrance more efficiently, but they also create more heat, helping to cover the surface area in melted wax quicker, so you can cut down on burn times while maintaining an even melt.

  4. Keep away from moving air. Fluctuating air currents can make your candle burn at an inconsistent pace, resulting in sooting or smoking. That’s why it’s best to keep your candle away from vents, air conditioners, and open windows.

  5. Store candles properly – in a cool, dry place. Keep the lids on to prevent flammable debris from falling in. Also, to get the most scent and best fragrance throw from your candles, a good practice is to burn them within a year of receiving them.

With the right know-how and care, you can enjoy your favorite candles properly and safely while getting the most out of each one. Happy burning, friends!
